Choosing Your Color: Kitchen Paint Ideas
08-17-09

There are many rules and even more suggestions to selecting from kitchen paint ideas. Guides will have page after page with the questions and answers you supposedly will need. And, while that is wonderful for those who have the time and the effort to devote to thousands of "facts", we want to instead address the concerns for those who are limited with their research. For kitchen paint ideas, we offer only one rule: follow your theme.

Simple? Most assuredly, but that does not make it wrong. That merely means that you will have something that can actually be done. This is not about choosing colors that reflect appetite levels or bring supposed balance to the room. This is about discovering your theme and finding kitchen paint ideas that work toward it.

Too many people complicate their ideas: they believe color dictates their lives. It doesn't. It's meant to be fun, a reflection of who you are. Not a mood altering travesty or tribute to the latest trend (which you will probably have to change very quickly to keep up with other fashions).

The kitchen is where you will spend most of your time; you want it to represent you in an interesting way. Which is why you choose a theme and then find the kitchen paint ideas that follow it.

Easy? Of course, and that is the point. And, while you may be wondering how exactly to choose your theme and follow it through, don't worry. We have simple answers to that as well:

Look at the rest of your home: if you prefer a modern approach, then you obviously don't want your kitchen to reflect a country appeal. You most likely already have a theme present in your other rooms. Consider that when deciding on kitchen paint ideas. The colors can match and create a flow.

Look to magazines: the best examples you can find of kitchen paint ideas are ones in print. Do not be afraid to take suggestions and work them as you like. While not every idea will apply to your kitchen, you can find ones that will. And, since these are already grouped together as themes, you will have an easier time of deciding what you like and what you just can't stand.

Look at colors themselves: nothing dictates (or collides with) a theme faster than the colors you choose and certain shades are exclusive to certain ideas.

For example, if you intend to create an Italian appearance, you certainly wouldn't go with stark whites. You would choose deep oranges and reds, vibrant colors. And, if you were looking to create a contemporary look, your kitchen paint ideas would not include greens and yellows (which are more appropriate for shabby chic).

Colors go with the theme. You just need to work on coordination.

So forget all of those do's and don'ts. Remember instead to simply choose a theme and then work with kitchen paint ideas that support it. It truly is that easy.
